Shift to park message

This morning I got the "shift to park" message on the DIC even though I was already in park. I tried putting in gear and back in park but got the message again. Turned off car and restarted and message went away. I think this has happened once before as well.

Temporary glitch? Concern? Anyone else ever have this happen?

2018 Sport back Essence red needle.
Mine started this last week..."shift to park" while in park..did same as you, restarted, jiggled shifter, put in gear, reparked, pushed in on reverse button while depressing brake, pushed up hard on shifter, released brake, pinging finally went away. Car is a 2020..also have some sort of "reduced power" message when trying to accelerate immediately. What is happening to the relatively new car?

Are you still not able to use the manual shifting? Have you resolved this issue?
I took the car to the shop over a month ago and they told me they ordered me a new shifter unit. Still no call or any word on the part. I ended up removing the jumper harness. I get the StP message but very rarely now. Before it was a daily issue. But it happens maybe once a month and now to solve the problem I just flick the shifter button and it goes away. Very strange. Not sure if this will turn into a recall or not.

"Reduced Power" might be fixed by a replacement gas pedal assembly or EBCM flash.
Do not let your warranty slide.

Shift to Park error started up for me a few weeks back. I bought the wiring harness and installed it this evening. First two tries no error message so I'm hoping it is a long term fix.

When the micro switch is worn out, it causes an intermittently bad connection to the shift control circuit that is affecting the shift interlocking function. GM dealerships want over $750 for the repair! By doing a bit of googling this seems to be a common issue in other former GM brands in Europe/AUS/NZ as well and the cause of this is a faulty microswitch in the shifter assembly.

Stellantis (fmr GM Europe) sells an updated repair part - microswitch. I got a couple of extra switches (Made in Japan), it takes a couple of minutes to swap them, you will need only soldering iron. PM me if you need one.

P1780 Opel Park/Neutral Position Switch Malfunction

Possible causes
– Faulty Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch
– Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch harness is open or shorted
– Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch circuit poor electrical connection
– Misadjusted Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch
Symptoms
– Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
P1780 Opel Description
The Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch detects the shift lever position and sends signals to the ECM. The ECM receives signals (NSW, R, 2, and L) from the park/neutral position switch. When the signal is not sent to the ECM from the park/neutral position switch, the ECM judges that the shift lever is in the D position.

How difficult is it to get to the micro switch though? In installing the harness I saw no easy access to any switch. The shifter seems to be totally enclosed.

Well, our 2018 Regal is plagued with the now almost omnipresent dreaded "Shift to Park" warning message in the DIC. The car is out of warranty. I have had enough jiggling the transmission lever, moving it up and down through the gears and cursing at it. I ordered a new control lever assembly and should receive it next week. The back order shortage is resolved, so it appears. Any tips to replace this assembly? I know I have to remove the center console to get access to the attaching nuts, which is a pain.

I have imported a couple of these failing microswitches from Opel Germany, but GM USA never bothered to offer these switches. PM if you need one.

Sooner or later you will get "Shift to Park" messages when shutting down the engine, and the shifter is in fact in the park position. This is very annoying since it refuses to turn off the power before the park gear is detected the cause of this is a faulty microswitch in the shifter assembly. The primary cause is that corrosion or other material builds up on the park switch contacts. It prevents the Body Control Module (BCM) from electronically sensing that the vehicle is in the park position. Thus, the BCM prevents the ignition from turning off. It keeps happening until and unless you fix the shift to park message.

Sometimes, wiggling the shifter lever and changing the transmission positions a few times works. However, this is only a temporary solution.

In most cars, the “Shift to Park” issue is covered under the bumper-to-bumper warranty. It is not covered in the powertrain warranty because the failed component is not an internal part of the drivetrain.

Just wondering if there are any markings on the microswitch itself which would point to the actual manufacturer (Omron/NKK/Cherry etc) & part number of that switch?

I was recently working on fixing an old pachinko machine. It had an Omron limit switch in it that was broken. It turns on a light when the machine doesn't have enough balls in the hopper to pay out. The Omron part number on the switch from the 70s was all I ended up needing. They still sell a version of it. A few bucks and I had a drop in replacement.

Someone was selling the switches on E-bay for about $30 but their listing has ended. A little bit of searching and it looks like the switch part number is Z12227-ND and is available in stock at Digi-Key for just under $4 each.

It looks like many Chinese sellers sell this part for under $15 on eBay. Chinese manufactured part with no markings. Unauthorized copies of Japanese-made Omron switches.

Yeah...I'd just source the Omron switch from an electronic parts supplier. No need to pay extra money for a knock off.
There is a problem with electronic parts suppliers since they sell bulk and you will buy a bag of these switches.

Amazon also sells Chinese copies of Japanese-made Omron switches. "According to the original factory specifications."

You can buy a single switch from Digi-key. Says it’s Omron branded part.

Digi-key is also where I bought the replacement Omron switch for my pachinko machine. Less than $10 including shipping.

If you're concerned about ordering a single $5 part from them--consider looking at their range of tools--wire strippers/soldering irons/magnifiers/pliers/crimpers/connectors--there's bound to be something that will either aid in the switch replacement or some future project...🤓
