Verano Turbo Fuel Economy on 93 Octane

Automatic or manual transmission?

I just did a 100 mile trip in 84F temps with the AC and was seeing 44 mpg on the computer. The 6-4peed manual has 6,000 miles on it with tire pressures at 44 psi cold. I averaged just under 60 mph for almost all highway run. Just get on the highway and reset the avg mpg.

Automatic Transmission

My car is an automatic.

Re: Automatic Transmission

Sounds about right on the turbo manual vs automatic fuel economy. I've got both transmissions in the 9-5 and the difference is 6 mpg difference when driven similarly.

The throttle is very sensitive and you do have to drive like your foot is on an egg.

Edit: 260 miles and 6.7 gallons AC on. About 90 miles in 5th gear...d'oh! This was the same upper 38's as the trip computer. I'm totally impressed.

Riding the country roads from Lancaster, PA, to Ambler, just north of Philly and the highway back I saw 32 mpg or about 1 mpg higher than the car computer. That was with AC on in 80+ temperatures. On the all highway return from Harrisburg the computer is show 37 mpg @ 60 mpg(1.5 hours with me not driving) and I still have a 1/3 tank remaining and mpg is still climbing after we left PA hills and I got back in the driver's seat, was down to 33.9 mpg! Though most of the westward travel had a stiff almost 15. Mph heading wind. Eastern PA76 has never been fuel economy friendly.

I did see a tank of fuel go 523 with only 13.3 gallons used for 39.3 mpg. The drive is 120 miles round trip with speeds held at 60 mph. Tire pressures at 44 psi with Trifecta tune with a few full throttle run ups. So 40 mpg is possible as I was seeing 44 mpg round trip, all highway.

250 Mile Highway Trip on 87 Octane

Yesterday, I took a 250 mile highway trip. I drove between 50 mph and 70 mph on hilly roads with the climate control set at 72 degrees. The temp outside was in the high 80s and I was using 87 octane Shell Top Tier gasoline with 10% ethanol. The car's trip computer reported 31.7 miles per gallon. I refueled using the same gas pump and my hand calculations show I got 32.24 mile per gallon.

Mike,

I have no source of ethanol free Top Tier premium gasoline in my area of the country. 😡 I want to use only Top Tier gas since that is what GM recommends owners use in their cars.

Top tier fuel in any DI engine accomplishes nothing anymore. For a port injection engine it is a must to keep the intake valves and intake ports clean as well as the injectors, but a DI engine only air passes the intake valves as the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber at over 2000 PSI (vs 45-50 psi port inj). This also keeps any deposits from forming in the injectors as well.

Car wasn't made to use 87 oct 91 and up

So true. The ECU will pull timing resulting in less power & fuel economy no matter what the owners manual may say.

91-923 are a must to realize the most power & MPG.

Also, get a RX oil separating catchcan system on it to stop the intake valve coking:

Or this is what the valves will look like in 10-15k miles.

Top Tier Gas

I use nothing but Top Tier gasoline in my direct injected Verano because that is what General Mothors recommends and they are the experts.

From what I have read and it makes common sence to me is Top Tier gas is more important in a direct injected engine because the injecors are exposed to the very harsh enviroment of the combustion chambers.

I can not tell a fuel economy increase with the use of 93 octane verses 87 octane. I have a fuel log of every gallon of gasoline that my Verano has used since I purchased the car.

If you drive your car like I do, it's gonna be dead in 5 years no matter what kind of gas you put in it. So drive it like you stole it 😀

488 miles and only 12.253 gallons for almost another 40 mpg tankful. Trip computer should pesimistic at 38.2 mpg with 50 mph average of 100 mile one way trips most highway with little AC. Car is a 6-speed on 92-93 octane with 8,500 miles.

That is excellent fuel economy!

Another set of milage figures and gallons used are Canadian. Using regular Shell gas. Drove 500 kms at no more than 100 km/hr. and 80 kms of city driving. Driving conditions were ideal. Mileage was 41.8 mpg. The same trip driving at 120 km/hr would give me 33 mpg. I was impressed.
