FWIW someone on FB group bought this card from Navicards and said it worked.

It is a Mac thing. It indexed the whole drive.

Remove factory SD card and insert cloned card into my wagon, then turned it on.
Go to navigation system and the infotainment tries to load maps.
"SD card has been removed" message shown on screen.
Turn vehicle off and then insert factory card back in.
Turn on vehicle and head to navigation system. Still same error message.

^ this suggests there's a physical communication problem (temporary?) between the reader slot and either card

Started vehicle with the factory card, navigation system loaded up.
Switch over to audio and then swapped the SD card. Headed back to navigation system and this time it says this SD card is not for this navigation system.
Swapped back to factory card and the navigation system works again.

^ this suggests the NaviUpgrade card is being read, but deemed invalid for your system

Tried the actual SD card that was delivered, worse than the cloned card.
Never got to the message that says this SD card is not for this navigation system.
Only stuck with SD card removed message.

My experience has been that, in a scenario where your slot is physically reading the card(s) properly, cloning the data to a generic card will initially give you

I'm still testing removing all partitions readable in Windows from a NaviUpgrade card and then copying the data back to the card. This, i hope, won't affect the hidden Android "initialization" data, but will remove the erroneous overlapping extra partition showing up on those cards, similar to agaric's idea.
If it works i'll post back the process, but ours is still off the road for winter, so it's not as convenient to test as just leaving the card in for a few drives & see what happens.

I get it that our cars came with Nav but it is sooooo much easier to just use Android auto or apple car play. Google maps is going to be much more current and have much better traffic info than Nav on an SD card.

I like having it as a backup. Sometimes Android Auto has issues, so it's nice to have something else available. I'm willing to wait for the last update they release that works with the system, and update to the best maps I can get.

I totally agree the CarPlay works good. However, it requires a wired connection and our Regal is sorely lacking the space to place the phone with it.

I just like the built in Nav interface better and I don't like losing the bottom ribbon on the screen with Carplay. FWIW I just took a long trip and the updated maps I recently bought and installed had the newer roads and POIs that the old maps did not but admittedly they will be out of date where any new construction is involved.

I decided to take a flyer on a card from NaviUpgrade on eBay. Mostly because eBay has a great return policy on car parts. You'll see cards for sale that people pull out of wrecked cars. But we all known those do not work. The NaviUpgrade card did though. My system did ask if I wanted to initialize it and that it would be locked to the car. But it's been smooth sailing and I'm now on the 2023 maps. I have a 2018 white needle.

Also, for those making a backup, dd with the right parameters worked fine, and used this (32g SD) copy from the get go...
Not sure why all the talk about files and etc. as a true image is independent of the file system...

That S in SD stands for security. That spec does have some additional security features. I don't understand them well enough to know how they all work. But if a dd is all you need, that great. I had intended to grab an image before I put the card in my car, but when I dusted off the card reader for my desktop, it wasn't functional anymore.

When I was looking around on eBay, I did see one seller who was selling used cards. But, he had great ratings, a website, and a long presence on and off the site. His used cards also always came with the card reader out of the salvaged car. He always sold them in a pair, unlike the fly-by-night sellers hawking used cards from the pick-n-pull. That leads me to believe that the reader has some unique identifier and that's what they use when a card is initialized to a car.

I finally installed our card from NaviUpgrade and it eventually failed validation. They are advertising 23 sold - no way they have 30 + actual new GM SD cards.

Not sure why all the talk about files and etc. as a true image is independent of the file system...

All my postings regarding files & etc. are via Windows, so yeah, a useless effort.

Even if i had gotten into a Linux environment to explore/copy/DD, the card i got from NaviUpgrade is useless. Chefjpd had a similar experience getting a bad card from them. The whole overlapping/extra partition issue suggests to me that this card was a failed effort to clone & sell as "New." As our car has been off the road, i only recently installed it - past the seller's return window, and they're not responding to my messages on eBay at this point.

pulled out of a brand new 2023 Cadillac XT6... it was in the vehicle manual kit / binder of a brand new rental and I don't believe the car had been set up
