My GS exhaust project

I was kicking around doing a single muffler as well and as an alternative to the borla... magnaflow makes a "round" universal that will fit perfectly in the stock resonator location.

...you can get either one for ~$100 from hottexhaust.com

I'm in the same boat...besides cost, obviously...what are the main differences between doing the whole Borla Exhaust & the muffler? :stupid:

GTX I wish you had a jet pack. That way everyone could have you fly over the country in a matter of minutes, and tune up everyone's exhaust. Since that is probably not an option with our current technology. I will stick with reading all the exhaust posts.

I guess I don't understand what you are asking... My suggestion in that post is exactly the same as TprGTO's original post, just with an alternative for the muffler.

Borla does not make a "complete" exhaust for the Regal. So, if you are asking the cost difference between doing a custom setup like TprGTO versus buying a cat-back once they are available... that I can answer.....

A cat-back from someone like Magnaflow is going to run somewhere between $500-$750. A custom setup can be much cheaper. The muffler itself will be around $100 (magnaflow is $100, borla is $130). Then, the only thing you are paying for is labor at the exhaust shop... Maybe $100 tops for how little we need done. So, for around $200 you have your own custom exhaust.

So you may be asking why so much more for the cat-back? Well, it is replacing the entire exhaust system from the cat to the tips as opposed to just replacing pieces. There is a lot of R&D costs plus much more material they are supplying you with. Also, on most cars the piping is a larger diameter and flows better making that superior to piecing the exhaust together from the original. In the GS's case, we already have 3" piping from the cat to the Y-split, making it just as good as anything the aftermarket will eventually come out with so no real need to replace all of that. The only thing that needs replacing is the resonator and the mufflers ...at that point, it just becomes personal preference on what brand sounds best to you.

Hope that helps 🙂

LOL.... I will stick with worrying about my own for now. I barely got any sleep last night because I am too nervous/excited to go to the exhaust shop today. I got under the car last night and I am not sure my exhaust tip idea will work the way I want and I may be stuck with using the factory tips. We will see...

Edit: besides, if I was you and had a regular regal, I would do the Irmscher exhaust with the new lower skirt insert and call it a day. The exhaust looks great and that new rear skirt really improves the look of the rear-end. Trust me, I was trying to figure out a way to make it work on the GS!!

Good luck with that. I was interested in the irmscher grille and the shipping from overseas was a killer. Big boxes are very expensive to ship it appears.

i want the blacked out grill!! we should do a group buy so shipping can be lowered!

That's what I want but all black. I just can't see that little thing being almost $400 though, it needs lowered big time!

was the resonator straight through like the Borla exahust? im wondering what the car would sound like if you just left the resonator in and cut out the mufflers and added the straight pipe tips like you did.

Yep the stock resonator is straight-through, but I think it would be pretty loud with just that in place.

hmmm. i think ill try it out then. id build the tips and stuff first, drive around and then add the muffler if need be.

So i did rhe same install and mine doesnt seem as loud as your video is it maybe due to the fact that my car only has 250 miles on it and its not fully
broken in yet?

Once I find out what GM is going to do about my car, I plan on just cutting the mufflers off and adding a down pipe aimed downward on each pipe.

So exhaust won't be going out your bumper holes? That's gonna look ever weird not to mention the exhaust will get trapped under the car and could come into the cab. I don't think it's a good idea at all unless I'm reading it wrong.

No, you didn't read it wrong. I've seen other people do this on muscle cars. I won't be doing any mods until Spring. I'll end up having pipe run up to the exit ports. Inwas just thinking originally of I had time before it gets too cold, to cut the mufflers and run the car like that. I'll wait and do it right.

O ok. Well it only took me hour to do mine myself so I'm sure a shop could knock it out real quick!

Thanx for the thread. I really appreciated it and your sharing with the community. So you removed the stock resonator and 2 mufflers and replaced it with a single Borla in the place of the resonator? Nice idea.
