My GS exhaust project

Thanx for the thread. I really appreciated it and your sharing with the community. So you removed the stock resonator and 2 mufflers and replaced it with a single Borla in the place of the resonator? Nice idea.

You are welcome. Yes that is what I did. Utilized the factory y-pipe and cut off the side specific factory exhaust tips from the stock mufflers to reuse. Two 17 1/2" pieces of pipe. Weld the exhaust tips on to each piece of pipe, weld the pipes to the y-pipe, add hangers and done. Very simple exhaust project. The stock mufflers definately have some weight. The exhaust note sounds good now that the muffler has broken in. I highly recommend this exhaust mod to all GS owners.

Thanks you sir. I wondered how the drone was going to be after install and was pleased with the lack of. Weight savings indeed by removing both boat anchors.

No. Possibly someone else that is going to do this mod could weigh the different mufflers?

Stock mufflers weigh 17.30 lbs each. weight savings means nothing here. The borla is the same thing as the stock resonator (3" straight through glass pack system) but bigger in length and width. I'd say the borla adds about 2-4 lbs over the resonator. The two straight pipes you add will be about 2-3 lbs each plus welding and exhaust hangers. I the end you might end up saving 25 lbs which is absolutely nothing in almost a 4000 lbs car.

It does sound really nice. Might be a bit loud for me though. I'm wondering what the sound/volume would be like if I straight piped the resonator and swapped both existing mufflers with the borlas.

pardon the noob question - but your install shouldn't have any overall effect on passing emissions (damn TX metro!), correct? since you are really just replacing the resonator and mufflers...

i'd love to have something that gives the car a more ballsy sound but can't fail emissions. thanks!

You are welcome and will pass emissions testing no problem after the install.

How is the volume in the cabin when cruising at highway speeds, any different than it was at stock? That would be my only reservation at this point.

You are welcome. The volume in the cabin is sedate, yet the exhaust note sounds good. Conversations are no problem and little drone. The stock exhaust was too sedate for my liking and that is why I did the exhaust mod. I wanted an exhaust note to match the looks.

You should be able to pass TX emissions just fine with the mods we're discussing. You'll have to start removing the cats completely and get pretty crazy to not pass.

Of course not, it's a straight 3" piece of pipe. There's no gain in a exhaust unless you remove the cats.

Very very similar. His sounds a bit louder than mine, but other than that, its very close.

It cost me ~$90 and took a local muffler place about an hour to do the work.

Just purchased my 2012 GS on Saturday. I am coming from a 2009 Pontiac G8 GT, so this is a totally new ballgame for me. I love the exhaust sound (and the price)! I'd also be interested in hearing a clip of the GS that just removed the resonator only. I'd like to do something soon--the stock exhaust is way too muted!
