TSB 19-NA-100 Radio Software Version 22.8 and TSB 19-NA-249 Favorites Grayed Out- Nov 4, 2019

With respect to the 45 second rule... this applies only at startup. If the car is put in gear before the system is booted, it doesn't matter how long the car has been on or driven after that, the lines will still disappear. I have never had the backup lines disappear when I have given the system ample time to boot. I'm not one of those people that like to throw it in gear the second the car has started, so maybe those that are constantly in a rush see it more often. One of those "YMMV" I suppose.

I do wonder how much of the infotainment bugs are the fault of the Google (or Apple) vs. the infotainment system itself. Seems like with every update to Android Auto, new bugs appear. Seems to be more cell phone and software related.
I prevented that from happening by always back into a parking spot. So it will always be forward when exiting. 😛

For those that have the backup line issue, does using remote start get the system booted prior to you entering the vehicle?

Using remote start doesn't help. Doesn't matter how long I wait after I started they will still disappear. I've driven the car for an hour and then gone to back up and they will disappear. What's really frustrating about the whole thing is they tell you 'oh you have to wait for the system to boot'... that's BS. The one thing that backup camera is supposed to do is come on immediately after the car is put in reverse no matter how long it's been since it was started up. It has priority as it's a safety system, and reverse lines are part of that. This is nothing more than poor coding on GM's part. I don't use Android Auto because I never liked it honestly, I think CarPlay did a much better job, but I've never been a fan of iOS. And two, it's not wireless in the tourx so I don't really care to use it. My car is the dealer right now getting this nav update and a bunch of other stuff fixed that they probably won't fix because, well I've never had good luck with dealers. The brand new loaner (1500 miles, paper plates still) Encore GX ST I have has wireless Android Auto which is fine, but it kills my battery. I have a Pixel 3a XL which I love, and the battery life on that phone is exceptional, always has been. Even after 2 years I can go 2 days without charging it. But after being in this car for a couple hours not so much. So not a fan of Android Auto. I always just stream everything Bluetooth. Also the backup lines in the encore don't disappear no matter how quickly you put it in reverse after starting it. There's some issue I'm pretty sure with the steering angle input to the infotainment system. It uses that input to turn the reverse lines as you turn the wheel. It seems to be consistent when I turn the wheel the screen will stutter and then reverse lines will disappear. When they disappear the screen resolution changes also, again...it's a coding issue in the infotainment. Whatever. I still love my car.

I'm not on 22.11 yet, having just done the update to 22.10 myself a week or two ago. I had no real reason to visit a dealer and was hesitant to perform the update fearing I would turn my TourX into a brick. But then I figured if a dealer can do it, the update must be fairly foolproof. And it was....just following the prompts on the screen. I think there were about 4 screens displayed during the update, including 2 different very basic progress bars. After the last one, I thought it was done, but then a final screen showing updates of individual android apps appeared. After that it was all done.

I previously had the issue of greyed out FM radio station favorites, which is now solved after the update and then tuning and storing them again. The home screen with the 3 sections (audio, nav and phone) appears to have some small cosmetic changes. But all good and happy for the resources and help provided by this forum!

<files for the 22.10 update are in post #158>

I went to the dealer today for my scheduled appointment to get the software updated as per the TSB only to find out that the radio tech wasn’t there.

Also they are saying since the bumper to bumper is expired on my car that I have to pay out of pocket for the software update. Is that consistent with other folks experience?

I would imagine you'd have to pay for the labor. Dealers are hurting right now. They aren't doing much to go above and beyond.

Fair enough. I have an inconsistent flicker on my screen most notable with CarPlay. Tried swapping to another cord same situation. Also factory reset the radio and rebooted the phone. No improvement. I have also noticed skipping on Sirius. If I didn’t know any better I’d say there’s a loose connection somewhere.

They want to “diagnose” that first then decide on the software upgrade.

FWIW it’s a 2019 with 21.1.

I'd remind them that it's your dime. They can perform a upgrade to the software with no expectation that it will solve the problem.

Dealer updated the software Friday to 22.11. Maybe a little bit better but still occasional flicker. More trial and error needed.

Does it fix the navigation screen blackout issue and/or reverse grid lines issue?

I have updated to 22.10 two years ago, reverse grid lines still disappears on certain conditions and nav system doesn’t boot up on start (black screen) on certain conditions.

To correct nav screen issue with out restarting car, go to settings -> system-> running applications. Select Navi and force STOP the Navigation application. The navigation system will start up normally.

Is it worth bothering to get dealer to upgrade?

I can’t speak to those two issues.

Taking it back tomorrow to the dealer to try to diagnose my screen flicker and hopefully get it fixed.

The newest update fixes the navigation (not) loading issue.

There is no fix, and will never be a fix, for the reverse lines disappearing. GM's official solution for this issue is to allow the system to fully boot before shifting the vehicle into gear. I have found that if I wait to shift until the navigation is fully loaded, this provides ample time for the system to boot. Since implementing this practice, I have never had the lines disappear.

Thanks. I guess I'll try to have the dealer upgrade the software to fix the Nav issue. Hopefully, the 22.11 upgrade doesn't introduce some other bugs.

I'm used the reverse grid line issue now, so no biggie.

It mostly catches me when I'm backing out of my garage. I could back in instead, but it's actually way easier to unload the car from the back and walk into my front door, rather than trying to go around the car and through the garage door. If I back in, I'm walking around the car either way. Plus it is way easier to work on the car in that direction. My garage is pretty tight with both my cars inside. And if I'm diving in too deep to the Triumph, I put the Buick outside. But I don't really need the lines to back out of my driveway, so it's not a big deal. It's just annoying.

For those that might be interested, after a day and a half in the shop for diagnostics, the technician advocated to replace the radio and radio display. Covered under extended warranty so no sweat there. They claim 3-5 business days for parts. We shall see.

Hopefully final update on my radio flicker. Dealer replaced the “radio control” or display last week. It was ~$400 in labor and ~$450 in parts. Thankfully covered by extended warranty. Took the car on 3 hr road trip and no flicker. Whew

2020 Essence 19K miles just back from oil change at the dealer in Boulder, CO. Had the preset grayout and backup lines problem (service bulletin 19-NA-249) fixed with radio calibration 80YN128334001. Backup display now includes an enable/ disable button for the lines in the lower left corner. They also did the brake recall but I don't know how one would ever be able to tell if it was successful.
