Hi.  I have struggled with my 
apple carplay not recognizing my device including providing power through the port.  I took it to the dealer who wrongly suggested I needed a new interface in the console.  I brought it back after that didn’t work and they fixed it saying nothing was wrong.  It went out again after a couple of months and I was just living with it until a friend suggested I remove the battery cable and leave it disconnected for a while.  I did this and left it off for 30minutes.  When I reconnected it and tried the port it worked perfectly and has ever since. 
I know there are some software updates that need to be applied and there are ways to check that but if it is up to date and you run into the car not recognizing any phone and changing the cable doesn’t work, try the battery option.  It is a hard reset and worked for me.
