Well Subaru does some rather nice off road machines, just not in the USA.Yeah, this drives me nuts. I'm over on the Outback and Forester forums (same username), and half the guy over there want to "raise" their Subarus and put knobbies on them...
Like they're going to take a unibody wagon with open differentials and no low range rock crawling?!
If Subaru would bring back the Legacy wagon, then that would be something... But that's now dead worldwide, not even just here in the States.
Down Under you could get a Forester diesel with a low range, the low range is a little electric under drive unit, not a true transfer case, something like 1.6/1 reduction, nothing wild. I looked into installing one, it is a bolt in supposedly but +$3,000 plus install cost, nope.
Set up tis way it would not be a rock crawler, but would work on the dunes, and easy trails. I did not venture far in the photo. Not enough torque,
